One of the defining moments in Broken Social Scene’s career is their performance at Lollapalooza in 2006. Not only did they manage to gather their entire lineup (including Feist, members of Metric, Stars, Apostle of Hustle, and Jason Collett), fans were so disappointed that their set was cut short that they were chanting for BSS as the Red Hot Chili Peppers began setting up the stage for their headlining performance.
With this live version of “Anthems,” Metric’s Emily Haines and Stars’ Amy Millan shared a duet with backing vocals provided by Feist and Lisa Lobsinger. It marked one of the very few occasions that all the female members of Broken Social Scene were on stage. It’s also a cacophony of violins and horns, making it one of the best live performances I’ve ever heard. “Anthems,” in general, has been the essential sentimental song that really does make me feel like a teenage girl, and it truly is a testament to writer/co-lead Kevin Drew’s sensitive side. Even though I don’t believe their recent breakup is permanent, you guys will be missed.
